Mountain Biking – Cuyamaca Mountains
One of my favorite things about San Diego is that you can surf in the morning and then head out to the mountains by lunch for some exploring of sorts. Looking to get back out on the mountain bike, I joined my brother in law for an afternoon of hitting the trails in the Cuyamaca Mountains.
Mountain Biking – Cuyamaca Route
The weather in February couldn’t get any better so we decided to get outside and train on the bike at altitude in the great outdoors. The trails are plentiful out near Lake Cuyamaca and Sunrise Highway so we decided to do a figure 8 route from Hwy 79, across Sunrise Highway and through parts of Anza Borrego.
Mountain Biking – Cuyamaca Trails
We entered off Hwy 79 just north of Sunrise Highway and had the trail all to ourselves for most of the day. Although we were determined to crush a great ride, we did take the time to stop every now and again to take in the views and of course quench our thirst. Trails are very well marked and are easy in some areas and more difficult / technical in others.
Mountain Biking – Single Track
The single track through parts of Anza Borrego may have been my favorite as the trails were outstanding and less technical in this almost meadow like setting. Our total ride time for the map above (Strava App) was 1 hour 41 minutes for a total distance of 14 miles. Total elevation gain was 1,565 feet with a max elevation of 4,941 feet.
As always with mountain biking, come prepared. I forgot my shoes again for this ride but managed anyways. It would have been nice to be clipped in but I wasn’t about to use it as an excuse not to get out and ride. Be careful as always on these trails on where you decide to take a break as there are some blind corners and riders are coming from both sides at times. Be clearly visible from both sides when taking a break.
If you are need of any hiking equipment or sports related gear, Laguna Mountain Sports and Supply is located off Sunrise Highway. We forgot a bike pump and needed a close solution which wasn’t too bad as the drive along Sunrise Highway is one of the best in Southern California http://goo.gl/maps/XzC47
