Two very popular activities that San Diegans enjoy while being outside are running and pedaling their beach cruisers. With great weather outside, I decided to grab some fresh air and go for a run / beach cruise at our city’s largest playground………Mission Bay Park. Mission Bay is part of the recreational Mission Bay Park, which is the largest man-made aquatic park in the country, consisting of 4,235 acres, approximately 46% water and 54% water. The combined area makes this park the ninth largest municipality owned park in the United States. http://goo.gl/maps/tQFXN
Mission Bay Park
Not only does Mission Bay Park offer great views but also offers a great smooth path throughout the park perfect for walking, running, biking, roller-blading, etc. The views while exercising in this park are spectacular as palm trees and blue water fill every corner of your eye. The paths are also marked every ¼ mile for those who like to monitor their distance achieved.
Mission Bay Park – Parcourse
After my run, I headed on over to the Parcourse Fitcenter offered near DeAnza Cove Park. This is definitely one of the added benefits of this park and I wish San Diego would develop more of these around some of the other parks. Here one has access to various equipment for pull-ups, sit-ups, stretching and other forms of exercises highlighted on the site. http://goo.gl/maps/NfM5R
Mission Bay Park
After doing some pull-ups, I decided I would rent a beach cruiser and explore the bay’s boardwalk and continue on the path around Mission Bay Park. There is usually parking available off Santa Clara Street in Mission Beach so I started and ended my bike ride at this location. I took an hour to cruise the route above (5 miles) and stopped frequently to take in some great Mission Bay views.
Movin Shoes – Including Old and New
There is not much gear involved in order to enjoy Mission Bay Park. Because I was going for a run first, I decided it was time for some new running shoes so I headed to Movin Shoes (3 locations in San Diego) in Pacific Beach, which is my go-to for running shoes. They have a decent amount of shoes on hand but the service is what makes this place great. Most workers are avid runners or were in the past and really seem to know what’s best for your foot and stride. If you’re in the market for a new pair, I encourage you to visit this store.
Mission Bay Park – Cheap Rentals
For those looking to rent a beach cruiser in the Mission Bay area, I would recommend Cheap-Rentals in Mission Beach just south of Santa Clara. Their bikes are great for a nice leisurely cruise and also offer many other rental items including surfboards, sups, skateboards, etc. The staff working inside were really helpful as well, adjusting my seat and making sure the air in my tires were sufficient.
Mission Bay Park – Olive Cafe
After your bike ride, be sure to stop in the Olive Café for a little power breakfast or lunch. Their food and drinks are outstanding.
