Rock Climbing Mesa Rim

Mesa Rim Rock Climbing Gym

There are a few indoor rock climbing gyms to choose from in San Diego but everyone in town usually raves about one in particular…..Mesa Rim.  Having never been to this location before and wanting to explore their over 200 routes, I decided I would join my friend Erin for a belay lesson and an evening of climbing.  http://goo.gl/maps/vDGgo

Upon checking in and signing the liability waiver form, I was asked if I had ever climbed before and if I could pass a belay test.  I have climbed a handful of times but could tell I wouldn’t be able to pass their test so I enrolled in the belay lesson ($8), day pass and full gear rental for a total of $31.  The gear supplied was decent and the lesson was very valuable.  Our instructor made sure everyone was comfortable with safety checks, knots and the belay itself.  We were only three to this class and not sure if they can handle more than this number but they seem to offer the belay lesson every hour during business hours.

After successfully completing the belay class, Erin and I felt confident and assured in each other’s skills to move throughout the climbing portion of the gym in search of 5.4-5.7 routes.  A benefit to Mesa Rim that was offered is the ability for solo climbers to climb alone with the assistance of a mechanical belay of sorts.  I was a little freaked out at first trying this but got very comfortable with it after a few attempts.

Erin and I probably tried 6-7 different routes throughout the gym and grew more comfortable with climbing throughout the evening. Everyone around in the gym was very courteous and supportive of other climbers.  It almost felt a bit like a family with complete strangers if that makes any sense.  After only 60 minutes of climbing I was quite fatigued and my hands were shot.  Mental toughness, strength and chess is the best way for me to describe rock climbing as you always have to think forward about where you are going or what makes sense while of course holding on for dear life.

Mesa Rim is like most indoor rock climbing gyms in town where they offer more than just climbing.  Bouldering, fitness center, yoga classes, slackline, ping pong and a lounging area were all offered under the Mesa Rim roof.  I would definitely go back again and climb again.  I appreciated the fact that they are very cautious with all climbers and learning the art of belay is best taught by an instructor and not a youtube video.

THANKS MESA RIM!!!!!
